The countdown is ON for Christmas 2019, and if you’re still rattling your brain to find that “perfect gift” for your creative friend, partner, family member, and even yourself, this post is for you.
We’ve all exerted ourselves and our wallets in the past, spending hours at the mall, a few dollars too many on gifts that we hope to be game-changing, and realizing months later that they’ve either been re-gifted or stored away in a closet where cockroaches and old summer sandals go to die. Not any more! This is the year to maximize your purchasing power and shop with intent for the creatives in your life. Creatives don’t value things that won’t be useful to them. They value tools, resources, and experiences that will encourage them to do better, fuel their creativity, and set them up for success in their pursuits.
Staples Canada has curated an eclectic list this season called the 12 Best Gifts For the Holiday, and in it you’ll find products that every creative should have in their arsenal to think outside the box, work more efficiently and effectively.
Here are my top five picks from that list:
The power of journaling has been positively documented over the years and heavily endorsed by Oprah. How can one deny the power of Oprah? I shan’t. The benefits behind writing down your thoughts and feelings include problem solving, reducing stress, mindfulness and accountability. This is a great present for creatives to get organized in the upcoming year.
Apple MacBook Pro – MPXQ2LL/A 13″, 2.3 GHz Intel Core i5, 128 GB SSD, 8 GB LPDDR3, MacOS Sierra, Space Grey
If you want to step it up a notch, a new computer like the Apple MacBook Pro is the way to go! I bought this exact model earlier in the year and I can vouch for it’s read speeds, efficiency, and vivid details. Every self starter and entrepreneur needs a computer that they can rely on for the smallest to the biggest projects at any given moment, not just between 9am to 5pm.
Why would a creative entrepreneur need a photo printer that fits in their pocket? Well, at first glance you might think of the HP Sprocket Photo Printer as a novelty but as a creative myself I know it as much more than that. Vision boards are a great tool to manifest a desired outcome into our reality, and a portable printer like the Sprocket can allow us to take pictures of what we see when we’re on the go, have the photos printed in up to 40 seconds, and hopefully visualized into our existence. It’s a fantastic tool for goal setting.
According to Entrepreneur.com, podcasting can help your business grow, and with a 2017 Ulster Media study claiming 10 million Canadians listened to podcasts that year alone, it’s safe to say that podcasts are one of the best tools and sought after mediums for creatives and entrepreneurs to trade secrets. If you’re shopping for a podcast fan, I recommend the Bose Soundlink which has a wireless range of up to 30 feet and eight hours of battery life to catch those nuggets of insight loud and clear.
“Google, tell me my horoscope today.” Or how about, “Google, tell me the latest news in business.” Yes, it’s true, we’re valuing efficiency so much that we can now ask a piece of technology to tell us what we need to know. The future rocks! I brought home a Google Home this fall and it has been a great sidekick for my home office. It tells me the weather before I head out for a meeting, answers a question before I can even get to my computer to find out, and it’s strangely become a dependable office mate. It’s one of the most efficient and useful pieces of technology on the market, and ideal for home offices for the freelancers out there.
Remember, you work hard for your cheddar. Everything you purchase this holiday season should be put to good use. Whatever you choose to go with, make it count! Happy shopping and happy holidays!
